Kid's Korner

Proudly Native American

Kathryn, the youngest woodworker at our studio, recently completed her first piece of scroll sawn art, called "Sister Wolf". She scrolled her project pieces from 1/4" red heart, 1/4" paduak, 3/8" maple, 1/8" gold mirror Plexiglas, and a walnut slab. Finish includes decorative paints and varnish.

This gift to her proud parents kicked off a Native American theme by which to decorate their bedroom. As you can see through her art, Kathryn is especially proud of her Native American heritage as a Choctaw descendant.

From Trash to Treasures

Scraps from our shop do not go to waste. Cut offs from the big saws as well as the scroll saw are thrown into a bucket just in case we need them in the future. But, when the bucket gets full, the scraps have to go. Instead of burning them or throwing them out, we give them to Montessori Academy's Art Club.

At a weekly Art Club session, budding young artists rework the scraps into modern "woodworking" designs. But, because they have no access to tools yet, their designs must incorporate the cutoffs as they are. From these bits of trash, these clever children create real treasures.
